Bits & Beams is an installation created in collaboration with Dutch visual artist Roel Weerdenburg for Grounded Festival. The work brought together 36 CRT monitors of varying sizes, each displaying one of twenty of my animated pieces inside the historical tunnels of Fort bij ’t Hemeltje in Houten, Netherlands.
Arranged as a series of monument-like clusters, the monitors formed sculptural totems that referenced both architectural mass and the visual presence of brutalist memorials. Their stacked forms turned the obsolete technology into a kind of shrine — a physical acknowledgment of the media infrastructures that shaped an earlier digital era. Visitors entered the space through a dark corridor from the main festival area, encountering the glowing CRTs as isolated beacons within the tunnel. The result was a quiet, atmospheric environment where the hum of the screens, the pixel animations, and the surrounding architecture created a sense of meditative industrial solitude.
