Pool is an audiovisual installation created for Spaces to Speak, Places to Play, an exhibition by Maureen Jonker at Expo Bart, Nijmegen. Presented as a projection on the floor and built on spatial structures designed by Jonker, the work echoes the feeling of standing at the edge of a swimming pool. The pixel-based animation and the accompanying soundtrack by Michel van Collenburg respond to the idea of public space as a site of movement, play, and subtle control.
The piece was developed through a shared rule-making process between the three of us. Each collaborator introduced constraints—ranging from working in color instead of monochrome, incorporating repetition, syncing and desyncing visuals with sound, including still frames, or building rhythmic layers from unfamiliar sources. These rules shaped the final work, turning Pool into a structured playground where visual and sonic elements intersect through limitation, interpretation, and collective authorship.
